Awards & Contests
Below is a list of the awards & contests that our Club supports in an effort to promote the study and education of classical subjects in the New York City Metropolitan Area
Current Awards
ROME/ATHENS SUMMER SCHOLARSHIPS
This is a special opportunity for Club members to win scholarships of up to $3,000 toward the cost of study in the summer session of the American Academy in Rome, the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, or similar programs for study in Greece and/or Rome. All members with one year of paid membership in the Club are eligible to apply for the award. The award is open to secondary school teachers and graduate students. Interested individuals should obtain applications from the Academy, School or Institute, complete them, and send copies of all applications materials by January, 15 of the current year to Prof. David Petrain.
PRESIDENT'S GRANT
Grants of $500 - $1,000 are available to support projects promoting interest in classical antiquity in the New York area. We are especially interested in public lectures and theatrical productions. All applicants must be current New York Classical Club members.
All application materials must be submitted by February 1 of the current year and sent to Prof. David Petrain.
PHYLLIS WINQUIST TUITION ASSISTANCE AWARDS
These awards are bestowed by the New York Classical Club in honor of a master teacher, Phyllis Winquist, to support candidates who are taking courses to acquire or improve skills in teaching Latin or Ancient Greek in grades 7-12. Candidates must be paid members of the Club at the time of applying and during the twelve months of the funded period. They must either be teaching Classics in grades 7-12 or show a clear indication of doing so in the near future. To request an application, please contact Talia Varonos-Pavlopoulos. The application deadline for 2020 will be announced soon.
2020 Contests
High School Latin Sight Translations - This year's Latin Sight Translation Contest for High School Students will be held on Tuesday 10 April, 2018 at 4pm on the 5th Floor, Lowenstein Building, Fordham University, 113 West 60th Street & Columbus Avenue. All contestants must be registered by April 1, 2018. To register your students please complete the online registration form. Oral Reading Contests in Greek and Latin - This year's Oral Reading Contests in Greek and Latin will be held on Saturday April 7, 2018 at 3:00 pm at 602 Hamilton Hall, Columbia University. Please contact Prof Katharina Volk at kv2018@columbia.edu by April 1, 2018 to register and for more information.
College Latin and Greek Sight Translation - The College Latin and Greek Sight Translation will be held Friday April 13, 2018 at New York University. Please contact Prof. David Sider of New York University at david.sider@nyu.edu to register and for information.
New York City Dionysia - The Annual Spring High School Theater Contest (a 20 minute adaptation of a classical drama) will be based this year on Euripides Bacchae and takes place on Friday, May, 8, 2020 from 5-7pm, at Fordham Preparatory School's Leonard Theater on the Fordham University campus (Bronx, NY).
