Awards & Contests
Below is a list of the awards & contests that our Club supports in an effort to promote the study and education of classical subjects in the New York City Metropolitan Area.
Current Awards
Summer study Scholarship
This is a special opportunity for Club members to win scholarships that help cover the cost of study in the summer session of the American Academy in Rome, the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, or similar programs for study in Greece and/or Rome. Students may also apply for funding to attend the CUNY Latin/Greek Institute in New York City. All members with two years of paid membership in the Club are eligible to apply for the award. The award is open to secondary school teachers and graduate students. Interested individuals should obtain applications from the Academy, School, or Institute, complete them, and send copies of all application materials by March 16, 2026 to Patricia Hatcher.
President's grant
Grants of $500 - $1,000 are available to support projects promoting interest in classical antiquity in the New York area. We are especially interested in public lectures and theatrical productions. All applicants must be current New York Classical Club members. Please send an email sharing a bit about yourself and your Classics work; any references, websites, or media (photos, articles etc); and what the funds would be used for.
All application materials must be submitted by February 1 of the current year via email to Patricia Hatcher.
Phyllis winquist tuition assistance awards
These awards are bestowed by the New York Classical Club in honor of a master teacher, Phyllis Winquist, to support candidates who are taking courses to acquire or improve skills in teaching Latin or Ancient Greek in grades 6-12. Candidates must be paid members of the Club at the time of applying and during the twelve months of the funded period. They must either be teaching Classics in grades 6-12 or show a clear indication of doing so in the near future. Please click here to access the application. All application materials must be submitted by May 10. If you have any questions, please email Talia Varonos.
